Chapter Sixteen

NOON WEDNESDAY, HAWKE rolled into the Trembley’s. He led Jack and Horse out of the trailer and put them in their paddock. He cleaned out the trailer and unhooked it from his work truck. Today was usually his day off. Now he had half a day off.

He headed to his apartment and took a long hot shower while Dog slept in his dog bed surrounded by his toys.

It was four o’clock by the time Hawke was dressed, hungry, and ready to head to Alder. He planned to have another chat with Mrs. Cusack. This time he’d try not to get on her bad side. An early dinner at the Firelight sounded like a good idea. He planned to eat alone and get more information.

On the drive from the trailhead, he’d placed a call to his sergeant requesting more background information on Mrs. Cusack and Leanne Welch.

Hawke walked out to get in his truck and found Darlene giving a lesson in the indoor arena.

“Hawke, do you have another date? I don’t think I’ve seen you clean up this nice more than three times a year and now it’s been three times in less than two weeks.” The twinkle in Darlene’s eyes wasn’t missed on him.

“I do not have another date. I am not dating anyone. I cleaned up because I’ve been in the woods for four days.” He spun around to walk away.

“You didn’t happen to go by Charlie’s Hunting Lodge, did you?” The insinuation and merriment in her voice told him she’d learned more about the woman she’d seen him with at the Firelight.

He just waved his hand and kept on walking. She wasn’t going to rile an answer out of him. His landlords’ need to discover what he did on his off hours was both endearing and aggravating. Dog jumped into the back of the truck. Hawke closed the tailgate and climbed in the truck cab.

In Alder, he drove straight to the Firelight. There weren’t as many vehicles parked in the lot. That meant he’d have more of a chance to visit with Mrs. Cusack and less people seeing him there.

Mrs. Cusack was at the hostess stand when he walked into the building. Her smile drooped as he walked up to her.

“You never ate here before and yet, here you are again in less than a week.” She didn’t move to take him to a seat.

“How do you know I’ve not eaten here before? You didn’t work here until your husband’s death,” he said, knowing this wasn’t the honey he needed to spread to get the answers he wanted.

“I guess you would know that if you had been here before,” she said, conceding and picking up a menu.

“I’m hungry, but I wouldn’t mind if you’d sit with me for a bit and answer some questions that have been bothering me.”

She narrowed her eyes and led him to a booth in the back of the restaurant with only empty tables in the vicinity. “What can I get you to drink?”

“I’ll have an iced tea, please.
